Oct 2011 - NOWProjet - OCTOPUS
IAE SAVOIE MONT BLANC
The Octopus project is a university project traversing cultural and country frontiers uniting 4 Post-graduate students who exhibit different capacities.
The project is titled “Octopus” encompassing a multi-disciplinary perspective based on IT (Information Technology) approaches: Urban environment and Virtual world (web, social network) with the sole goal: the creation of an Urban Geo-Localized game.
Our wish with this project is to offer or re-define the meaning of the word “to discover” taking as an example, someone who finds himself in the context of “space and environment”. Man has lost his curiosity for the environment which surrounds him. In front of his computer, everything is easily accessible for him. For example, with Google map, it’s possible to travel and discover the world all while sitting comfortably in front of a computer screen. However, man is tired of this chilly and numerical culture which has been firmly established in the interactions with the world. He’s searching for tangible interactions that can re-invigorate his passion to discover again. Getting back into contact with someone on facebook is a lot less meaningful than a face to face discussion over drinks in a bar.
With the advent and explosion of mobile technologies, a unique opportunity has been presented to mix the digital into a world based on senses and interaction; a real and physical experience. In other words, mobile technology is a windfall of opportunities to incite “desire” in individuals to engage in his surrounding environment.
With this project, we are experimenting with the new possibilities offered by mobile technology to create a new manner of physically investing and interacting with his environment. We believe in the power of games, entertaining and fun, as a lever of motivation permitting man to weave new social links and forget about limitations, fears and rules of which he is tangled in.
